1999 NHL Quarterfinals round - Series 783.
St. Louis Blues vs Dallas Stars

Game 6: Dallas wins at St. Louis, 2-1. In winning its best-of-7 Qtrs series WWLLWW, the Dallas Stars followed the precedent set by the 1970 St. Louis Blues, which won both its Qtrs and its Semis series WWLLWW. St. Louis has now lost nine Qtrs 6th games, an NHL high; its latest loss is its fourth Qtrs home Game 6 loss -- a new NHL high. The Dallas series record is now 2-1 in best-of-7 format Qtrs action; the St. Louis series record is now 5-14 in best-of-7 format Qtrs action. The 14 Qtrs series losses by St. Louis are both an NHL and an NBA high (the Atlanta NBA Hawks and the New York NBA Knickerbockers are next with 11 Qtrs series losses).

Game 5: Dallas wins vs. St. Louis, 3-1. In NHL best-of-7 Qtrs action, the role model for the Dallas Stars is the 1970 St. Louis Blues, which began its series WWLLW and won Game 6 and the series. The role model for the St. Louis Blues is the 1972 St. Louis Blues, which began its series (vs. the Minnesota North Stars) LLWWL, but won Games 6 and 7 and the series. St. Louis loses its tenth NHL Qtrs 5th game, which is an NHL high.

Game 4: St. Louis wins vs. Dallas, 3-2. Twice before in best-of-7 Qtrs action has the Stars franchise opened a series with a WWLL record: In 1980, against the Montreal Canadiens, the Minnesota North Stars lost Game 5 but won Games 6 and 7 to bounce the reigning 4-time champions from the 1980 playoffs; in 1972, against the St. Louis Blues, Minnesota won Game 5 but lost Games 6 and 7 and the series. In terms of home ice advantage and win pattern, the 1972 series sets a precedent for this current series. In the 1996 Qtrs, St. Louis posted a LLWW record vs. the Detroit Red Wings, and won Game 5 but lost Games 6 and 7 and the series.

Game 3: St. Louis wins vs. Dallas, 3-2. Once before has Dallas opened a best-of-7 series with two wins at home and a loss on the road: In the 1998 Prelim round, a series which Dallas won WWLLWW. Once before had the Minnesota North Stars opened a best-of-7 series with two home wins and a road loss: In the 1972 Qtrs (vs. the St. Louis Blues), a series which Minnesota lost to St. Louis, WWLLWLL. In 3rd games of Qtrs action, St. Louis improves to 10-9 and an NHL-high 8 home wins, while Dallas falls to 2-1.

Game 2: Dallas wins vs. St. Louis, 5-4. Dallas has a series record of 2-0 when winning the first two games of a best-of-7 series. Minnesota had a series record of 2-2 when winning the first two. St. Louis has a series record of 1-9 when losing the first two games of a best-of-7 series; their sole series win came in the 1972 Qtrs vs. Minnesota. Dallas is now 1-2 in Game 1 of best-of-7 NHL Qtrs and 1-2 in Game 1 at home in best-of-7 NHL Qtrs action. St. Louis is now 8-11 in Game 1 of best-of-7 NHL Qtrs and 2-9 in Game 1 on the road in best-of-7 NHL Qtrs action.

Game 1: Dallas wins vs. St. Louis, 3-0. Teams that win an NHL best-of-7 Qtrs round Game 1 at home by a 3-0 score have a Game 2 record of 2-0 and a series record of 1-1; the sole series loss was suffered by the 1972 Minnesota North Stars . . . to the St. Louis Blues. Dallas is now 2-1 in Game 1 of best-of-7 NHL Qtrs and 2-1 in Game 1 at home in best-of-7 NHL Qtrs action. St. Louis is now 7-12 in Game 1 of best-of-7 NHL Qtrs and 3-8 in Game 1 on the road in best-of-7 NHL Qtrs action. The Game 1 loss by St. Louis is its 64th in NHL best-of-7 Qtrs action and its 44th in such action on the road -- the highest numbers of their kind in either the NBA or the NHL.
