1999 NHL Finals round - Series 787.
Buffalo Sabres vs Dallas Stars

Game 6: Dallas wins at Buffalo, 2-1. Dallas improves its NHL Finals series record to 1-0 (100.0%), while Buffalo's NHL Finals series record falls to 0-2 (0.00%). At 114:51, the 1999 NHL Finals Game 6 was the second-longest ever in a best-of-7 format NHL Finals, behind only Game 1 of the 1990 NHL Finals between Edmonton and Boston (by 22 seconds). The Dallas Stars now have won 35 games in best-of-7 playoff series (up from 19 before these playoffs); the Buffalo Sabres now have won 72 games in best-of-7 playoff series (up from 58 before these playoffs and past -- ironically -- the 62 that the Minnesota North Stars had won in this setting). The Dallas Stars best-of-7 series record (all rounds) improves from 3-4 to 7-4 in the 1999 NHL playoffs; the Buffalo Sabres best-of-7 series record (all rounds) improves from 7-18 to 10-19.

Game 5: Dallas wins vs. Buffalo, 2-0. In Game 5, home-team Dallas scored its goals at 2:23 of the 2nd period and at 15:21 of the 3rd period. The best-of-7 format NHL playoff game that came closest to mirroring this game was Game 1 of the 1992 Preliminary-round series between Montreal and Hartford: Montreal won at home 2-0 with goals at 16:18 of the first period and 15:55 of the third. Buffalo falls to 0-2 in fifth games of NHL Finals.

Game 4: Buffalo wins vs. Dallas, 2-1. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series through 1998, once before has a team won by one goal on the road in Game 1, lost by two on the road in Game 2, lost by one at home in Game 3, and won by one at home in Game 4. The team doing so was the 1960 Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Semis, which lost Games 5 and 6 and the series. With its win, Buffalo improves its Finals Game 4 franchise record to 2-0, a tie for an NHL-best.

Game 3: Dallas wins at Buffalo, 2-1. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series through 1998, twice before has a team won by one goal on the road in Game 1, lost by two on the road in Game 2, and lost by one at home in Game 3. The teams doing so were the 1960 Detroit Red Wings in the NHL Semis, and (ironically) the 1990 Minnesota North Stars in the NHL Prelim round. Both teams won Game 4; both teams lost the series.

Game 2: Dallas wins vs. Buffalo, 4-2. This game was the 317th in best-of-7 NHL Finals play, but only the 2nd in which the scoring order was visitor-home-home-visitor-home-home. The first was Game 4 of the 1981 Finals, which, ironically, also was won by the Stars (then the North Stars of Minnesota) vs. the New York Islanders. In Game 4 of the 1981 Finals, the fourth goal of the game came at 7:37 of the 2nd period; in Game 2 of the 1999 Finals, the first goal of the game came at 7:22 of the 2nd period.

Game 1: Buffalo wins at Dallas, 3-2. In this game, Dallas held the ninth longest one-goal lead by a home team in the NHL Finals (38 minutes 15 seconds). That is the longest such lead since 1994, when the New York Rangers at home in Game 1 of the Finals led by one goal for 42 minutes 12 seconds before eventually losing the game to the Vancouver Canucks.

Pre-series history. In NHL best-of-7 Finals action, the Dallas Stars' series record is 0-0 and the Buffalo Sabres' series record is 0-1; Dallas' game record is 0-0 and Buffalo's game record is 2-4.

Dallas finished 23 points (11.5 games) ahead of Buffalo in the 1998-99 NHL regular season.

In previous NHL best-of-7 Finals action, the team with the 11.5-game lead has a series record of 1-0 (the New York Islanders, 1981).

In previous best-of-7 action in all NHL playoff rounds, the team with the 11.5-game lead has a series record of 5-3.

In previous best-of-7 action in all NHL, NBA, and MLB playoff rounds, the team with the 11.5-game lead has a series record of 7-4.
