SERIES NOTES:
St. Louis and the New York Mets meet for the first time in best-of-7 post-season play... With their Game 1 victory in St. Louis, the Mets improve their franchise Game 1 record in best-of-7 play to 2-5, while the Cardinals' franchise Game 1 record in best-of-7 play falls to 6-13... After its Game 2 loss, the St. Louis franchise record in second games after Game 1 home losses fell to 5-1, while the Mets took a 2-0 lead in games for the first time in franchise history in an MLB best-of-7 playoff series... Series 821 is the 19th MLB best-of-7 series in which the road team won the first two games; the series record of the road team in the first 18 such series is 15-3 -- the three teams that rebounded from the 0-2 deficits to win their series provide ironic role models for the 2000 Cardinals: Kansas City in the 1985 World Series (defeating, of all teams, St. Louis); the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series (St. Louis' current opponent); the New York Yankees in the 1996 World Series (defeating Atlanta, which had just defeated St. Louis)... After two games, the Mets are en route to not only a sweep but also a WhoWins™ annihilation: In the 36 half-innings played, the Mets have led after 30, the games have been tied after 6, and St. Louis has led after none; again, though, after the 36 half-innings in the first two games of the 1996 World Series, Atlanta led after 34, the games were tied after two, and the Yankees led after none -- yet the Yankees won that series... After three games, the Mets lead the series two games to one: For teams such as the Mets which begin a best-of-7 series WWL, their series success is less when they open the series on the road (as the Mets have); the exception seems to be in Semis-round play, in which the Mets' predecessors posted a 80%+ series record irrespective of site... Game 4 between the Mets and Cardinals was the highest-scoring Game 4 in best-of-7 MLB Semis history at 16 total runs, breaking the previous record of 15 set in Cleveland's 8-7 victory over Baltimore in the 1997 A.L.C.S.... In MLB best-of-7 history, the Mets' 7-0 shutout of St. Louis is the 21st Game 5 shutout, and the most one-sided Game 5 shutout since Atlanta shut out St. Louis 14-0 in Game 5 of the 1996 N.L.C.S.; in the last five best-of-7 series lost by the St. Louis Cardinals, three of the final games were lost by lopsided shutout (7-0 vs. the Mets in the 2000 N.L.C.S.; 15-0 vs. Atlanta in the 1996 N.L.C.S.; 11-0 vs. Kansas City in the 1985 World Series).
