The WLWWW win of series 835 by New Jersey over Pittsburgh is the 13th in NHL Semis-round best-of-7 series, the 25th in NHL best-of-7 series (all rounds), and the 54th in NHL, NBA, or MLB best-of-7 series.

SERIES NOTES: Game 5: New Jersey hosts Pittsburgh and defeats the Penguins 4-goals-2 to win series 835, 4-games-1; Pittsburgh ties a record for fewest goals at home in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series (zero), set by Boston in 1943 and tied by Chicago in 1960 and by Ottawa in 2001; in best-of-7 Semis Game 5 play, New Jersey improves its record to 4-1 (1-0 at home), while Pittsburgh sees its record fall to 2-2 (1-2 on the road); in best-of-7 Semis series, New Jersey improves its record to 3-2 (1-0 with Game 1 at home), while Pittsburgh has its record fall to 2-3 (1-2 with Game 1 on the road) . . . Game 4: New Jersey visits Pittsburgh and once again shuts out the Penguins, 5-goals-nil, to take a 3-games-1 lead in series 835; in best-of-7 series dating back to 1905, series 835 marks only the third time that an NHL or an MLB team shut out its opponent on the road in Games 3 and 4 (the first time was in series 46, in which the Detroit Red Wings did it to Boston in the 1943 NHL Finals; the second time was in series 131; in which the Montreal Canadiens did it to Chicago in the 1960 NHL Semis; both Detroit and Montreal swept their respective series); in best-of-7 playoff history, the last team to go LWLL @ VVHH and win the series was the New York Islanders in series 479 (vs. the Washington Capitals in a 1987 NHL Prelim-round series); if the series ends in five games or if Pittsburgh scores fewer than three goals in Game 6, New Jersey will have set records in fewest goals allowed on the road in a best-of-7 playoff series . . . Game 3: New Jersey visits Pittsburgh and shuts out the Penguins, 3-goals-nil, to take a 2-games-1 lead in series 835; New Jersey, whose best-of-7 Semis Game 3 record of 0-4 was the worst franchise record (NHL, NBA, or MLB), improves its record to 1-4 (1-0 on the road); Pittsburgh sees its best-of-7 Semis Game 3 record fall to 3-2 (2-1 at home); before the 2001 NHL playoffs, in five NHL series did a team take a 2-games-1 series lead with a 3-goals-nil shutout in Game 3 (and with Games 1-2 at home and Game 3 on the road) -- in those series, the team with the 2-games-1 lead posted a 4-1 series record; the last team to go LWL @ VVH but win a best-of-7 series (and thus serve as a role model for the 2001 Penguins) was the New York Knickerbockers in series 814 (vs. Miami in the 2000 NBA Qtrs); the last NHL team to go LWL @ VVH but win a best-of-7 series was the Washington Capitals in series 579 (vs. the N.Y. Rangers in the 1991 NHL Prelim round); the last team to go LWL @ VVH but win an NHL Semis best-of-7 series was the Detroit Red Wings in series 174 (vs. Chicago in the 1966 NHL Semis) . . . Game 2: Pittsburgh visits and defeats New Jersey 4-goals-2 to tie series 835 at 1-game-all; the win is Pittsburgh's first in three tries on the road in a best-of-7 Semis Game 2, while New Jersey's best-of-7 Semis Game 2 record falls to 1-3 (0-1 at home); New Jersey led 2-goals-nil as late as 29:19 into regulation -- in 2369 best-of-7 format NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2000, when the home team led by two goals 29:19 into regulation, its game record was 248-35 (.876) . . . Game 1: New Jersey defeats Pittsburgh 3-goals-1 to take a 1-game-nil lead in series 835; in best-of-7 Semis Game 1, New Jersey improves its record to 4-1 (1-0 on home ice), while Pittsburgh sees its best-of-7 Semis Game 1 record fall to 1-4 (0-3 on the road) . . . Pre-series: In best-of-7 Semis play, New Jersey has a 14-13 games record entering 2001, while Pittsburgh has a 13-10 record; New Jersey opens its fifth NHL best-of-7 Semis series, but only its first on home ice; New Jersey finished 15 regular-season points ahead of Pittsburgh -- in NHL best-of-7 series from 1939 through the 2001 Qtrs, the team finishing 15 regular-season points ahead of its playoff opponent sports a 15-4 (.789) series record.
