2004 NBA Preliminary round - Series 927.
Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs

Schedule and 2004 Results
Regular Season Records: San Antonio 57-25, Memphis 50-32
Game 1 on Saturday, 17 Apr: Memphis loses at San Antonio, 98-pts-74
Game 2 on Monday, 19 Apr: Memphis loses at San Antonio, 87-pts-70
Game 3 on Thursday, 22 Apr: San Antonio wins at Memphis, 95-pts-93
Game 4 on Sunday, 25 Apr: San Antonio wins at Memphis, 110-pts-97

SERIES NOTES:

After Game 4: The San Antonio Spurs visited and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 110-pts-97, thereby completing a 4-games-nil sweep of best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 927. The Memphis Grizzlies now thus have a 0-1 overall and Preliminary-round series record, having just completed their first best-of-7 NBA playoff series. The San Antonio Spurs thus improve their overall NBA series record to 13-12 and their NBA Preliminary-round series mark to 2-0. Series 927 becomes the third NBA Preliminary-round best-of-7 series (all three in the same day), the 42nd NBA best-of-7 series (all rounds), and the 155th MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series to end in a 4-games-nil sweep. The sweep is the first suffered by the Memphis Grizzlies, and the third achieved by the San Antonio Spurs.

After Game 3: With best-of-7 playoff series 927 now in Tennessee for Games 3-4, the San Antonio Spurs visited Memphis for Game 3 and defeated the Grizzlies 95-pts-93 to take a 3-games-nil series lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 4-0 series record and a 2-2 Game 4 record. The 2003 NBA playoff season was the first to feature a best-of-7 format Preliminary-round; in 2003, series 894 was the only one of the eight 2003 Preliminary-round NBA series to open 3-games-nil, but having taken that lead, the Dallas Mavericks didn't win the series until Game 7 against the Portland Trailblazers. A comeback from a 3-games-nil deficit is more likely (slightly more, at least) in the early playoff rounds and by young teams new to the playoffs. Both the NBA New York Knickerbockers and the Memphis Grizzlies are now down 3-games-nil; in terms of a series comeback, the upstart Grizzlies may enjoy the very slightest of edges (at least when compared to New York).

After Game 2: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 87-pts-70 in best-of-7 series 927 Game 2, thereby taking a 2-games-nil series lead. San Antonio is 8-0 when leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil. From 1947 through 2003, when the home team wins the first two games of a best-of-7 NBA playoff series by victory margins equaling or exceeding fifteen points, its series record is 16-1 (.941).

After Game 1: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 98-pts-74 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 playoff series 927. The Memphis Grizzlies thus lose their first best-of-7 NBA playoff game in their short history. From 1947 through 2003, when an NBA team wins Game 1 of a best-of-7 playoff series at home by a victory margin of 24 points or greater, its series record is 25-5 (.833). When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 10-2 overall series record and a 8-4 Game 2 record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2003-04 regular season, San Antonio finished 7 games ahead of Memphis. From 1947 through 2003, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 7 regular-season games, they have posted a 12-2 (.857) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents, with an active eleven-series winning streak. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 927 is the first best-of-7 playoff series for Memphis and the 25th for San Antonio. In best-of-7 playoff series, San Antonio has a 12-12 overall series record, a 1-0 Prelim-round record, and a 12-12 Game 1 record. Series 927 is the first best-of-7 meeting between Memphis and San Antonio.
