SERIES NOTES:

After Game 5: With best-of-7 series 908 having returned to Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Flyers took advantage of home ice by scoring a Game 5 victory over the New Jersey Devils, 3-goals-1. Philadelphia thus wins series 908 and ousts the defending NHL Stanley Cup Champions 4-games-1. The series victory lifts the Philadelphia Flyers to an overall series record of 30-23 and a Preliminary-round series record of 8-5; the loss drops the New Jersey Devils to a 20-12 overall series record and a 7-8 Preliminary-round series record. The win order for the victorious team in series 908 was WWLWW: Series 908 thus becomes the ninth best-of-7 NHL Preliminary-round series, the 31st NHL series (all rounds), and the 75th playoff series (MLB, NBA, and NHL; all rounds) to follow this win order.

After Game 4: The Philadelphia Flyers visited and defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-goals-nil, thus taking a 3-games-1 lead in best-of-7 playoff series 908. When leading a best-of-7 playoff series 3-games-1, the Philadelphia Flyers sport an overall series record of 14-2 and a Preliminary-round series record of 3-1 (with an active three-series winning streak). When trailing 3-games-1, the New Jersey Devils have an overall series record of 1-3 and a Preliminary-round series record of 0-2. The New Jersey Devils' sole series victory in the wake of a 3-games-1 deficit and the Philadelphia Flyers' last series loss after a 3-games-1 lead occurred in best-of-7 series 810 (a 2000 NHL Semifinals series), in which the Devils won Games 5-7 (including Game 7 in Philadelphia) to defeat and oust the Flyers en route to the 2000 NHL Stanley Cup.

After Game 3: With series 908 having moved to the Garden State, the New Jersey Devils hosted and defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-goals-2, thus halving the Flyers' series lead to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Philadelphia Flyers hold an overall series record of 13-3, a Preliminary-round series mark of 2-1, and an overall Game 4 record of 10-6. When trailing 2-games-1, the New Jersey Devils have an overall series record of 2-8, a Preliminary-round series record of 0-4, and an overall Game 4 record of 7-3.

After Game 2: As it was in Game 1, so it is in Game 2 that the Philadelphia Flyers hosted and defeated the New Jersey Devils by a score of 3-goals-2. Philadelphia now leads best-of-7 series 908 by a margin of 2-games-nil. Series 908 thus becomes only the second best-of-7 NHL series in which both Games 1 and 2 ended 3-goals-2 in favor of the home team: The first was series 534 (a 1989 NHL Quarterfinals series in which the Montreal Canadiens won Games 1-2 and then defeated the Boston Bruins in five games). When leading a best-of-7 series 2-games-nil, the Philadelphia Flyers have a sterling 14-0 overall series record and a 3-0 Preliminary-round series record; when trailing 2-games-nil, the New Jersey Devils have a 1-2 overall series record and an 0-2 Preliminary-round series record.

After Game 1: The Philadelphia Flyers hosted and defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-goals-2 to take a 1-game-nil lead in best-of-7 playoff series 908. When leading an NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1-game-nil, the Philadelphia Flyers have an 18-8 overall series record and a 4-3 Preliminary-round series record. When trailing an NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1-game-nil, the New Jersey Devils have an 8-7 overall series record and a 2-5 Preliminary-round series record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2003-04 regular season, Philadelphia finished one point ahead of New Jersey. From 1939 through 2003, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by one regular-season point, they have gone on to post a 7-2 (.778) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 908 is the 32nd best-of-7 playoff series for New Jersey and the 53rd for Philadelphia. In best-of-7 playoff series, New Jersey has a 20-11 series record, a 7-7 Prelim-round series record, and a 16-15 Game 1 record, while Philadelphia has a 29-23 record, a 7-5 Prelim-round record, and a 26-26 Game 1 record. Series 908 is the third best-of-7 meeting between New Jersey and Philadelphia; New Jersey won the previous two best-of-7 playoff series (685; 810) between the two teams.
