SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: The San Antonio Spurs won MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 950 with a 98-pts-96 Game 6 victory over the Supersonics in Seattle. The San Antonio Spurs thus improve their NBA best-of-7 playoff series record to 15-13 overall and 8-8 in the NBA Quarterfinals. The Seattle Supersonics see their NBA best-of-7 playoff series record fall to 11-13 overall and 6-8 in the NBA Quarterfinals. The win order for series 950 was WWLLWW (as posted by the victorious San Antonio Spurs): Series 950 thus becomes the eleventh NBA Quarterfinals series, the 21st NBA series (all rounds), and the 55th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to show such a win order.

After Game 5: MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 950 returned to San Antonio for Game 5, and the host Spurs defeated the Seattle Supersonics 103-pts-90 for a 3-games-2 series 950 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the San Antonio Spurs have a series record of 6-1 with an active five-series winning streak, and a Game 6 record of 5-2 (with an active five-Game-6 winning streak). When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Seattle Supersonics have a series record of 2-5 (with an active three-series losing streak) and a Game 6 record of 4-3. The last team in the NBA Quarterfinals (Conference Semifinals) to lead 3-games-2 with a site order of HHVVH but lose the series was the Miami Heat in series 814, losing in 2000 to the New York Knickerbockers; those 2000 Knicks thus set the most recent favorable precedent for the 2005 Seattle Supersonics.

After Game 4: In MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 950 Game 4, the Seattle Supersonics hosted and defeated the San Antonio Spurs 101-pts-89 to tie series 950 Game 4 at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in an NBA best-of-7 playoff series, the San Antonio Spurs have a 3-5 series record and a 3-5 Game 5 record, while the Seattle Supersonics have a 3-3 series record and a 2-4 Game 5 record. In the eight series in which San Antonio was tied 2-games-all after four games, winning Game 5 meant winning the series, while losing Game 5 meant losing the series. Teams with a win order and site order of WWLL @ HHVV in an NBA Quarterfinals best-of-7 playoff series had a 19-1 series record through 2004. The sole series loss was sustained by the San Antonio Spurs, in series 932 (the 2004 Quarterfinals) vs. the Los Angeles Lakers.

After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 950 in Seattle for Games 3-4, the host Supersonics squeaked out a Game 3 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, 92-pts-91, thus cutting the San Antonio series 950 lead to 2-games-1. Seattle's Game 3 victory came by the thinnest of margins -- one mere point. In the history of NBA best-of-7 playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Preliminary round, inclusive, when a team lost Games 1-2 but eked out a Game 3 victory by a single point, its playoff series record is 0-2 (series 405: the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1982 Quarterfinals; series 469: the Denver Nuggets in the 1986 Quarterfinals; both Milwaukee [to the Philadelphia 76ers] and Denver [to the Houston Rockets] succumbed in six games). When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the San Antonio Spurs have a 9-2 series record and a 7-4 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Seattle Supersonics have a 1-8 series record (with an active six-series losing streak) and a 3-6 Game 4 record. From 1947 through the 2005 NBA Preliminary round, inclusive, teams trailing a best-of-7 NBA Quarterfinals series LLW @ VVH (such as the 2005 Seattle Supersonics) have only a 2-43 series record. But one of the two winners -- the 2004 Los Angeles Lakers in series 932 -- set its favorable precedent for the 2005 Seattle Supersonics by having defeated the 2004 San Antonio Spurs.

After Game 2: The San Antonio Spurs again hosted and defeated the Seattle Supersonics -- this time by a 108-pts-91 score -- to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 950 Game 2. San Antonio now holds a 2-games-nil series 950 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 9-1 series record (but lost their last such series) and a 5-5 Game 3 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the Seattle Supersonics have a 0-4 series record and a 1-3 Game 3 record. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Preliminary round, teams winning Game 1 by 20+ points and Game 2 by 15+ points have a series record of 12-1. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series, teams losing Games 1-2 on the road in the Quarterfinals round (such as the 2005 Seattle Supersonics) have a 2-71 series record. The last team in this position to win the series was the Los Angeles Lakers in series 932 (in the 2004 NBA Quarterfinals vs. the San Antonio Spurs). Those 2004 Los Angeles Lakers thus set a favorable precedent for the 2005 Seattle Supersonics against the San Antonio Spurs.

After Game 1: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Seattle Supersonics 103-pts-81 to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 950 Game 1. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a series record of 11-3 and a Game 2 record of 10-4. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Seattle Supersonics have a series record of 2-8 (with an active seven-series losing streak) and a Game 2 record of 6-4. San Antonio won series 950 Game 1 at home by 22 points. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 NBA Preliminary round, inclusive, teams winning Game 1 at home by 22+ points have a 32-7 (.821) series record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2004-05 regular season, the San Antonio Spurs finished seven games ahead of the Seattle Supersonics. From 1947 through the 2005 NBA Preliminary round, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by seven regular-season games, they have posted a 15-3 (.833) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 950 is the 24th best-of-7 playoff series for Seattle, and the 28th for San Antonio. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, Seattle has an 11-12 series record, a 6-7 Quarterfinals-round series record, and a 13-10 Game 1 record, while San Antonio has a 14-13 series record, a 7-8 Quarterfinals-round record, and a 14-13 Game 1 record. Series 950 is the second best-of-7 NBA playoff meeting between Seattle and San Antonio; San Antonio won the previous meeting (series 407 in the 1982 Quarterfinals) in five games.
