SERIES NOTES:
After Game 7: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Detroit Pistons 81-pts-74 to win MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953, the 2005 NBA Finals. San Antonio thus improves its NBA best-of-7 playoff series record to 17-13 overall and 3-0 in the Finals. Detroit thus sees its NBA best-of-7 playoff series record fall to 19-12 overall and 3-2 in the Finals. Home teams have now won the last seventeen consecutive MLB/NBA/NHL Finals-round Game 7s, beginning with series 411 (in which the MLB Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in St. Louis to win the 1982 World Series). The victorious San Antonio Spurs posted a series 953 win order of WWLLWLW: Series 953 thus becomes the 25th MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series (all rounds), the fifth MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 Finals series, the 16th NBA best-of-7 playoff series (all rounds), and the first NBA best-of-7 Finals series to follow this win order. There were 84 best-of-7 NBA playoff games required in 2005 to crown a champion, up from 82 in 2004 but down from 88 in 2003 (the first playoff series of four rounds of best-of-7 play). With their new 3-0 NBA best-of-7 Finals series record, the San Antonio Spurs now trail only the NBA Chicago Bulls (6-0) for the best best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL Finals series record. San Antonio had been tied at 2-0 with the NHL Colorado Avalanche, MLB Florida Marlins, NHL Pittsburgh Penguins, and MLB Toronto Blue Jays for second place in that regard. The worst best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL Finals-round series record is 0-3, shared by the MLB San Francisco Giants and NHL St. Louis Blues.
After Game 6: The Detroit Pistons visited and defeated the San Antonio Spurs 95-pts-86 to knot MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 at 3-games-all. The Detroit Pistons have a Game 7 NBA playoffs record of 4-3 (with an active four-Game-7 winning streak). The San Antonio Spurs have a Game 7 NBA playoffs record of 1-3 (with an active three-Game-7 losing streak). The only other team in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series to follow a WWLLWL win order and an HHVVVH site order was the MLB New York Yankees in series 65 (the 1947 World Series): New York would defeat Brooklyn in series 65 Game 7. The only other team in a best-of-7 NBA Finals series to follow a WWLLWL win order was the Los Angeles Lakers in series 215 (the 1969 NBA Finals): Los Angeles would lose to the Boston Celtics in series 215 Game 7. From 1947 through the 2005 NBA Semifinals, home teams have a 74-17 NBA Game 7 record (all rounds), and a 12-3 NBA Game 7 record (Finals).
After Game 5: In the first MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 game to be won by the visiting team, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Pistons in Detroit 96-pts-95 in overtime to take a 3-games-2 series 953 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the San Antonio Spurs have a series record of 7-1 (with an active six-series winning streak) and a Game 6 record of 6-2 (with an active six-Game 6 winning streak). When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 3-games-2, the Detroit Pistons have a 3-6 series record (with an active three-series winning streak) and a 5-4 Game 6 record (with an active four-Game 6 winning streak).
After Game 4: The Detroit Pistons hosted and defeated the San Antonio Spurs 102-pts-71 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 Game 4. The 31-point margin of victory is the second-largest ever in a best-of-7 NBA Finals Game 4, second only to the 32-point (130-pts-98) Portland Trailblazers victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 4 of series 335 (the 1977 NBA Finals). Series 953 is now tied at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Detroit Pistons have a 9-6 series record (with an active eight-series winning streak) and an 8-7 Game 5 record, while the San Antonio Spurs have a 4-5 series record and a 4-5 Game 5 record. Through four games of series 953, the combined margins of victory is 84 points. That is the second-highest such value ever through the first four games in NBA best-of-7 playoff history, second only to that of series 843 (89 points) in which the Los Angeles Lakers swept the San Antonio Spurs in their 2001 NBA Semifinals series.
After Game 3: With the 2005 NBA Finals having shifted to Detroit, the Pistons hosted and defeated the San Antonio Spurs 96-pts-79 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 Game 3. San Antonio now owns a 2-games-1 series 953 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the San Antonio Spurs have a 10-2 series record and a 7-5 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-1, the Detroit Pistons have a 5-7 series record (and a 5-1 series record in their last six such series) and a 9-3 Game 4 record. In a best-of-7 NBA Finals series, the only two teams to win the series after trailing 2-games-1 (with Games 1-2 on the road and Game 3 at home) were the 1969 Boston Celtics and the 1977 Portland Trailblazers.
After Game 2: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Detroit Pistons 97-pts-76 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 Game 2, the 1900th best-of-7 format NBA playoff game. San Antonio thus takes a 2-games-nil lead in series 953. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a series record of 11-1. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 2-games-nil, the Detroit Pistons have a series record of 0-6. In the history of best-of-7 NBA Finals, only twice before has a team won Games 1-2 but lost the series. In 1969 (series 215), the Los Angeles Lakers won Games 1-2 of that year's Finals, but lost in seven games to the Boston Celtics. In 1977 (series 335), the Philadelphia 76ers likewise took a 2-games-nil lead in that year's Finals, but lost in six games to the Portland Trailblazers. Those 1969 Boston Celtics and 1977 Portland Trailblazers thus set favorable precedents for the 2005 Detroit Pistons. The 2005 San Antonio Spurs have won Games 1 and 2 of series 953 by a combined 36 points. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 Semifinals, the only NBA team to win Games 1-2 by more than a combined 36 points but lose the series was the Phoenix Suns in the 1995 Quarterfinals (series 691): Phoenix defeated the Houston Rockets by 22 points in Game 1 and by 24 points in Game 2, but Houston won the series in seven games en route to the 1995 NBA championship.
After Game 1: The San Antonio Spurs hosted and defeated the Detroit Pistons 84-pts-69 in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 953 Game 1 -- the 1899th best-of-7 playoff game in NBA history. San Antonio thus takes a 1-game-nil lead in series 953. When leading a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Antonio Spurs have a 13-3 series record. When trailing a best-of-7 NBA playoff series 1-game-nil, the Detroit Pistons have a 3-8 series record. In the history of best-of-7 NBA playoff series from 1947 through the 2005 Semifinals, teams winning Game 1 by 15 points have a perfect 8-0 series record overall and 1-0 in the Finals (in series 290, the Boston Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 98-pts-83 in Game 1 and won the 1974 NBA Finals in seven games).
Pre-series assessment: In the 2004-05 regular season, the San Antonio Spurs finished five games ahead of the Detroit Pistons. From 1947 through the 2005 NBA Semifinals, when NBA teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by five regular-season games, they have posted a 19-8 (.704) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 series 953 is the 31st best-of-7 playoff series for Detroit, and the 30th for San Antonio. In best-of-7 NBA playoff series, the Detroit Pistons have a 19-11 series record, a 3-1 Finals-round series record, and a 19-11 Game 1 record, while the San Antonio Spurs have a 16-13 series record, a 2-0 Finals-round record, and a 16-13 Game 1 record. Series 953 is the first best-of-7 NBA playoff series meeting between Detroit and San Antonio.
