SERIES NOTES:
After Game 6: Scoring 9:03 into the fourth overtime period, the host Dallas Stars defeated the San Jose Sharks 2-goals-1 and ousted them 4-games-2 from the 2008 NHL playoffs via their MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034 win. At 129 minutes three seconds, series 1034 Game 6 was the sixth-longest best-of-7 format NHL playoff game ever; at 129:02 into such games, the home team had had a game record of only 1-4. With the series 1034 win, the Dallas Stars improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 14-10 overall and 4-3 in the NHL Quarterfinals. With the series 1034 loss, the San Jose Sharks see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 9-11 overall and 1-7 in the NHL Quarterfinals. The series 1034 win order posted by the victorious Dallas Stars was WWWLLW: Series 1034 thus becomes the fourth NHL Quarterfinals series, the seventh NHL series (all rounds), and the 15th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion.
After Game 5: The San Jose Sharks hosted and defeated the Dallas Stars 3-goals-2 with a goal 1:05 into the first overtime period to complete a comeback from a 2-goals-nil deficit as late as 6:19 into the third period. Dallas now holds a 3-games-2 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Dallas Stars have a 7-0 series record and a 6-1 Game 6 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the San Jose Sharks have a 1-6 series record (with a six-series losing streak) and a 1-6 Game 6 record (with a six-Game 6 losing streak). In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2007, inclusive, teams trailing by two goals (such as San Jose in series 1034 Game 5) as late as 6:19 into the third period had a game record of 26-642 (.039). San Jose at that 6:19 mark of Game 5 thus had only a 3.9% historical victory probability in Game 5. Through five games of series 1034, the win/site order for the leading Dallas Stars is WWWLL @ VVHHV. In the history of MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series, only three previous series had shown such a win/site order - all in the NHL: In series 42, the Detroit Red Wings achieved this win/site order against the Toronto Maple Leafs, only to lose the 1942 NHL Finals in seven games to Toronto and thus become the first MLB/NBA/NHL team to lose a best-of-7 series after having led 3-games-nil (San Jose is trying to become the fourth); in series 54, the Toronto Maple Leafs achieved this win/site order against the Detroit Red Wings, and won the 1945 NHL Finals in seven games; in series 372, the New York Islanders achieved this win/site order against the Buffalo Sabres, and won their 1980 NHL Semifinals series in six games en route to the 1980 NHL championship.
After Game 4: Staving off a 4-games-nil sweep in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034, the San Jose Sharks visited and defeated the Dallas Stars 2-goals-1 to cut the Dallas series lead to 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Dallas Stars have a 4-0 series record and a 3-1 Game 5 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have a 0-1 series record and a 0-1 Game 5 record - the series/Game 5 loss occurred in series 808, in the 2000 NHL Quarterfinals against ... the Dallas Stars.
After Game 3: With MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034 in Texas for Games 3-4, the host Dallas Stars scored 4:37 into the first overtime period to defeat the San Jose Sharks 2-goals-1, thus taking a 3-games-nil series 1034 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Dallas Stars have a series record of 2-0 and a Game 4 record of 2-0. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 0-1 and a Game 4 record of 0-1.
After Game 2: The Dallas Stars visited and defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-goals-2 to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Dallas Stars have a 7-0 series record and a 2-5 Game 3 record with an active four-Game 3 losing streak. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a 0-5 series record and a 4-1 Game 3 record with an active four-Game 3 winning streak. The Dallas Stars in series 1034 thus become the 66th NHL team to win Games 1-2 of a best-of-7 playoff series on the road; they likewise won Games 1-2 on the road in series 1030 against the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Preliminary round.
After Game 1: On a goal 4:39 into the first overtime period, the Dallas Stars visited and bested the San Jose Sharks 3-goals-2 for a 1-game-nil MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034 lead. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Dallas Stars have a 9-1 series record with an active eight-series winning streak, and a 7-3 Game 2 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a 3-6 series record and a 4-5 Game 2 record.
Pre-series assessment: In the 2007-08 regular season, San Jose finished 11 points ahead of Dallas. From 1939 through the 2008 NHL Preliminary round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by 11 regular-season points, they have posted a 9-9 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1034 is the 24th best-of-7 playoff series for Dallas, and the 20th for San Jose. In best-of-7 playoff series, Dallas has a 13-10 series record, a 3-3 Quarterfinals series record, and a 10-13 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 9-10 series record, a 1-6 Quarterfinals record, and a 10-9 Game 1 record. Series 1034 is the third best-of-7 meeting between Dallas and San Jose; with Dallas having won the previous two (series 752, in the 1998 NHL Preliminary round; series 808, in the 2000 NHL Quarterfinals).
