SERIES NOTES:
Post-series assessment: With a goal 5:43 into the first overtime period of Game 7, the Boston Bruins defeated the visiting Montreal Canadiens 4-goals-3 for a 4-games-3 MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1124 victory. The series 1124 victory improves the best-of-7 NHL playoff series record for the Boston Bruins to 41-45 overall and 10-9 in the Preliminary round. The series 1124 loss by the Montreal Canadiens drops their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 74-37 overall and 12-6 in the Preliminary round. The victorious Boston Bruins posted a series 1124 win order of LLWWWLW: Series 1124 thus becomes the third NHL Preliminary round series, the eighth NHL series (all rounds), and the 14th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow this win order to completion. The end of series 1124 bore an uncanny resemblance to the end of series 1126 (also in the 2011 NHL Preliminary round, in which Vancouver defeated Chicago 4-games-3): In Game 7 of both series, the visitors scored late to tie the game (Montreal in Boston with 117 seconds left in regulation; Chicago in Vancouver with 116 seconds left), but the hosts then tallied the game/series-winner in the sixth minute of the first overtime period. In series 1124 Game 5, the host Boston Bruins eventually emerged victorious, but needed a goal 9:03 into the second overtime to prevail: In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2010, home teams at 9:02 into the second overtime had a game record of only 20-36 (.357).
Pre-series assessment: In the 2010-11 regular season, Boston finished seven points ahead of Montreal. From 1939 through the 2010 NHL Finals, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by seven regular-season points, they have posted a 14-6 (.700) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1124 is the 111th best-of-7 playoff series for Montreal, and the 86th for Boston. In best-of-7 playoff series, Montreal has a 74-36 series record, a 12-5 Prelim-round series record, and a 68-42 Game 1 record, while Boston has a 40-45 series record, a 9-9 Prelim-round record, and a 43-42 Game 1 record. Series 1124 is the 27th best-of-7 meeting between Montreal and Boston; Montreal won 19 of the previous 26. The 26 best-of-7 series matchups between Boston and Montreal are the most in best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL history.
