SERIES NOTES:

After Game 7: The New York Rangers visited and defeated the Washington Capitals 5-goals-nil for a 4-games-3 win of MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190. With the series 1190 win, the New York Rangers improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 27-36 overall and 10-6 in the Preliminary round. With the series 1190 loss, the Washington Capitals see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 11-22 overall and 8-12 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious New York Rangers in series 1190 was LLWWLWW: Series 1190 thus becomes the first NHL Preliminary-round series, the eighth NHL series (all rounds), and the 13th MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The Washington Capitals become the first NHL team in sixteen tries to lead a best-of-7 NHL Preliminary-round series with a win order of WWLLW through five games but lose the series. The New York Rangers win a best-of-7 NHL playoff Game 7 on the road for the first time in six tries. The five-goals-nil shutout by the New York Rangers in Washington is the most one-sided Game 7 road-ice shutout achieved in best-of-7 NHL playoff history, surpassing the old mark of four-goals-nil set in series 753 (by the Edmonton Oilers over the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 Preliminary round) and tied in series 1136 (by the Boston Bruins over the Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 Finals round).

After Game 6: The New York Rangers hosted and defeated the Washington Capitals 1-goal-nil to tie MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190 at 3-games-all. The Washington Capitals have a Game 7 record of 3-8 overall and 2-6 at home; the New York Rangers have a Game 7 record of 5-5 overall and 0-5 on the road.

After Game 5: With the winning goal 9:24 into overtime, the Washington Capitals hosted and defeated the New York Rangers 2-goals-1 to take a 3-games-2 lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Washington Capitals have a 6-4 series record and a 5-5 Game 6 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the New York Rangers have a 2-17 series record (but a 2-2 series record in the last four such series) and a 5-14 Game 6 record.

After Game 4: The New York Rangers again hosted and defeated the Washington Capitals 4-goals-3 to tie MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190 at 2-games-all. When tied in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-all, the Washington Capitals have a 3-8 series record and a 3-8 Game 5 record (winning the series when they won Game 5; losing it when they lost Game 5), while the New York Rangers have an 11-14 series record and a 10-15 Game 5 record.

After Game 3: The New York Rangers hosted and defeated the Washington Capitals 4-goals-3 to cut the Washington MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190 lead to 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Washington Capitals have a 6-9 series record and a 10-5 Game 4 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the New York Rangers have a 6-20 series record (with an active four-series losing streak) and a 15-11 Game 4 record. With the series 1190 Game 3 loss, the Washington Capitals see their Game 3 record upon having led a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil fall to 0-7.

After Game 2: On the only goal of the game, exactly eight minutes into the first overtime period, the Washington Capitals defeated the visiting New York Rangers 1-goal-nil to take a 2-games-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Washington Capitals have a 2-4 series record and a 0-6 Game 3 record. When trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the New York Rangers have a 1-19 series record (with an active four-series losing streak) and a 10-10 Game 3 record. The Washington 2-4 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series record when leading 2-games-nil exceeds only that of the old MLB Brooklyn Dodgers (0-1 series record when up 2-games-nil), NHL Hartford Whalers (0-1 when up 2-games-nil), MLB Milwaukee Braves (0-1), and NHL Quebec Nordiques (0-2) in that situation.

After Game 1: Tallying thrice in the second period, the Washington Capitals hosted and defeated the New York Rangers 3-goals-1 to take a 1-game-nil lead in MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190. When leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Washington Capitals have a 5-13 series record and a 6-12 Game 2 record; when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the New York Rangers have an 8-25 series record (with an active five-series losing streak) and a 13-20 Game 2 record (with an active four-Game 2 losing streak).

Pre-series assessment: In the 2012-13 NHL regular season, Washington finished one point ahead of the New York Rangers. From 1939 through the 2012 NHL Finals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by one regular-season point, they have posted a 12-4 (.750) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1190 is the 63rd best-of-7 playoff series for the New York Rangers, and the 33rd for Washington. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the New York Rangers have a 26-36 series record, a 9-6 Preliminary-round series record, and a 29-33 Game 1 record (with an active three-Game 1 winning streak), while Washington has an 11-21 series record, an 8-11 Preliminary-round series record, and an 18-14 Game 1 record (with an active three-Game 1 losing streak). Series 1190 is the eighth best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between the New York Rangers and Washington; Washington won four of the previous seven meetings.
