SERIES NOTES:
After Game 7: The Los Angeles Kings visited and outscored the San Jose Sharks 5-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-3 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1228 victory. With the series 1228 win, the Los Angeles Kings improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 15-20 overall and 8-8 in the Preliminary round. With the series 1228 loss, the San Jose Sharks see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 14-17 overall and 11-6 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious Los Angeles Kings in series 1228 was LLLWWWW: Series 1228 thus becomes the first NHL Preliminary-round series, the fourth NHL series (all rounds), and the fifth MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The Los Angeles Kings thus become only the fifth MLB/NBA/NHL team (in 319 tries) to win a best-of-7 playoff series after having trailed it 3-games-nil; the previous four: the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1942 NHL Finals (series 42); the New York Islanders in the 1975 NHL Quarterfinals (series 295); the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 MLB Semifinals (series 936); the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 NHL Quarterfinals (series 1098).
After Game 6: The Los Angeles Kings hosted and defeated the San Jose Sharks 4-goals-1 to tie best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1228 at 3-games-all. When tied 3-games-all in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the San Jose Sharks have a Game 7 record of 5-3, while the Los Angeles Kings have a Game 7 record of 4-4.
After Game 5: The Los Angeles Kings visited and bested the San Jose Sharks 3-goals-nil to reduce the San Jose Sharks best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1228 lead to 3-games-2. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 7-2 (with an active five-series winning streak) and a Game 6 record of 3-6. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 3-8 (with an active four-series losing streak) and a Game 6 record of 6-5.
After Game 4: The Los Angeles Kings hosted and doubled the San Jose Sharks 6-goals-3 to reduce the San Jose Sharks best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1228 lead to 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 9-0 and a Game 5 record of 5-4. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 1-11 (with an active six-series losing streak) and a Game 5 record of 6-6. The sole Los Angeles best-of-7 NHL playoff series victory in the wake of a 3-games-1 deficit occurred in series 533, in which they won Games 5-7 to defeat the Edmonton Oilers in the 1989 NHL Preliminary round.
After Game 3: The San Jose Sharks visited and defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-goals-3 in overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1228 lead of 3-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 4 record of 1-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 0-7 and a Game 4 record of 2-5 (with an active four-Game 4 losing streak).
After Game 2: The San Jose Sharks hosted and defeated the Los Angeles Kings 7-goals-2 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1228 lead of 2-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 6-1 and a Game 3 record of 4-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 2-10 and a Game 3 record of 5-7 (with an active four-Game 3 winning streak). Series 1228 Game 2 becomes only the second best-of-7 format NHL playoff game in which the road team took a 2-goals-nil lead only to have the hosts respond with seven consecutive tallies: In series 262 Game 2, it was the Buffalo Sabres which tallied the two opening goals on the road, with the host Montreal Canadiens answering with seven consecutive goals (followed by a Sabre goal to complete the scoring).
After Game 1: The San Jose Sharks hosted and topped the Los Angeles Kings 6-goals-3 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1228 lead of 1-game-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 10-5 and a Game 2 record of 7-8. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Los Angeles Kings have a series record of 6-15 and a Game 2 record of 9-12. Series 1228 Game 1 is the fifth best-of-7 format NHL playoff game in which the home team grabbed a five-goals-nil lead and the visitors then responded with three unanswered goals of their own to make matters interesting in the end.
Pre-series assessment: In the 2013-14 NHL regular season, San Jose finished eleven points ahead of Los Angeles. From 1939 through the 2013 NHL Finals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by eleven regular-season points, they have posted a 10-10 (.500) best-of-7 series record in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1228 is the 35th best-of-7 playoff series for Los Angeles, and the 31st for San Jose. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, Los Angeles has a 14-20 series record, a 7-8 Preliminary-round series record, and a 13-21 Game 1 record, while San Jose has a 14-16 series record, an 11-5 Preliminary-round series record, and a 15-15 Game 1 record. Series 1228 is the third best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between Los Angeles and San Jose: The teams split their previous two series against each other.
