SERIES NOTES:

After Game 6: The Edmonton Oilers visited and defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-2 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 victory. With the series 1327 win, the Edmonton Oilers improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 30-13 overall and 9-5 in the Preliminary round. With the series 1327 loss, the San Jose Sharks see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 17-19 overall and 12-7 in the Preliminary round. The win order for the victorious Edmonton Oilers in series 1327 was LWWLWW: Series 1327 thus becomes the ninth NHL Preliminary-round series, the 20th NHL series (all rounds), and the 33rd MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. The Edmonton Oilers thus win their first playoff series since best-of-7 series 970, in the 2006 NHL Semifinals.

After Game 5: The Edmonton Oilers hosted and outscored the San Jose Sharks 4-goals-3 in overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 lead of 3-games-2. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 11-1 with an active eight-series winning streak and a Game 6 record of 7-5. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 1-10 with an active ten-series losing streak and a Game 6 record of 3-8. The Oilers in Edmonton trailed the San Jose Sharks by two goals as late as 18:32 into the second period, and by a goal as late as 17:13 into the third period. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series from 1939 through 2016, inclusive, home teams such as Edmonton which trailed by two goals at 18:32 into the second period had a game record of only 33-310 (.096), and home teams which trailed by a goal at 17:13 into the third period had a game record of only 52-492 (.096).

After Game 4: The San Jose Sharks hosted and shut out the Edmonton Oilers 7-goals-nil to knot best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 at 2-games-all. When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 6-3 and a Game 5 record of 6-3, while the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 6-9 and a Game 5 record of 7-8. The seven goals notched in series 1327 Game 4 by the San Jose Sharks are the most ever by a team which had been shut out in Games 2-3 of a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, breaking the old record of six Game 4 goals (set by the St. Louis Blues in series 1300, in the 2016 NHL Semifinals against, ironically, the San Jose Sharks). When tied 2-games-all in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series, an Edmonton Oilers Game 5 win has invariably led to a series win (six occurrences), while an Oilers Game 5 loss has invariably led to a series loss (three occurrences). The 7-goals-nil San Jose shutout in series 1327 Game 4 is the most one-sided shutout in a best-of-7 NHL playoff Game 4 since the Detroit Red Wings whitewashed the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-goals-nil in series 505, in their 1988 NHL Preliminary-round series. The 7-goals-nil San Jose shutout is the most one-sided shutout in a best-of-7 NHL playoff game since series 992, in which the New York Rangers hosted and whitewashed the old Atlanta Thrashers 7-goals-nil in Game 3 of their 2007 NHL Preliminary-round series.

After Game 3: The Edmonton Oilers visited and shut out the San Jose Sharks 1-goal-nil to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 lead of 2-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 16-2 and a Game 4 record of 13-5. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-1, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 3-10 with an active four-series losing streak and a Game 4 record of 8-5. Edmonton has shut out San Jose in Games 2-3 of series 1327, thus making series 1327 the first best-of-7 NHL playoff series since series 1300 in which one team shut out the other in Games 2-3. In series 1300, it was the San Jose Sharks which shut out the St. Louis Blues in Games 2-3 in their 2016 NHL Semifinals series.

After Game 2: The Edmonton Oilers hosted and shut out the San Jose Sharks 2-goals-nil to tie best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 at 1-game-all. When tied 1-game-all in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 14-6 and a Game 3 record of 13-7, while the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 9-5 and a Game 3 record of 9-5.

After Game 1: The San Jose Sharks visited and outscored the Edmonton Oilers 3-goals-2 in overtime to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1327 lead of 1-game-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the San Jose Sharks have a series record of 12-6 and a Game 2 record of 10-8 (with an active four-Game 2 winning streak). When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 8-11 and a Game 2 record of 11-8. San Jose trailed by two goals on the road as late as 1:42 into the second period but prevailed: In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series games from 1939 through 2016, inclusive, road teams down two goals as late as 1:42 into the second period had only a 52-333 (.135) game record.

Pre-series assessment: In the 2016-17 NHL regular season, the Edmonton Oilers finished four points ahead of the San Jose Sharks. From 1939 through the 2016 NHL Finals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by four regular-season points, they have posted a best-of-7 playoff series record of 13-15 (.464) in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1327 is the 43rd best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the Edmonton Oilers, and the 36th for the San Jose Sharks. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Edmonton Oilers have an all-rounds series record of 29-13, a Preliminary-round series record of 8-5, and a Game 1 record of 23-19, while the San Jose Sharks have an all-rounds series record of 17-18, a Preliminary-round series record of 12-6, and a Game 1 record of 18-17. Series 1327 is the second best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between the Edmonton Oilers and the San Jose Sharks. Edmonton defeated San Jose in the 2006 NHL Quarterfinals (en route to a 2006 NHL Finals loss) in the only previous best-of-7 NHL playoff series meeting between the two teams; 2006 would mark the last appearance in best-of-7 NHL playoff action by the Edmonton Oilers until this series.
