SERIES NOTES:
After Game 7: The Florida Panthers hosted and bested the Edmonton Oilers 2-goals-1 to complete a 4-games-3 best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1565 victory. With the series 1565 win, the Florida Panthers improve their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in the Finals round. With the series 1565 loss, the Edmonton Oilers see their best-of-7 NHL playoff series record fall to 36-18 overall and 5-3 in the Finals round. The win order for the victorious Florida Panthers in series 1565 was WWWLLLW: Series 1565 thus becomes the second NHL Finals-round series, the sixth NHL series (all rounds), and the eleventh MLB/NBA/NHL series (all rounds) to follow that win order to completion. Series 1565 Game 7 became the first best-of-7 NHL Finals Game 7 in which the road team tied the game 1-goal-all after the home team opened the scoring; in the previous nine best-of-7 NHL Finals Game 7 in which the home team opened the scoring, the home team also tallied the second goal of the game. The Florida Panthers win their first NHL championship through their series 1565 Game 7 victory.
After Game 6: The Edmonton Oilers hosted and defeated the Florida Panthers 5-goals-1 to tie best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1565 at 3-games-all. When tied 3-games-all in a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, the Florida Panthers have a Game 7 record of 2-1, while the Edmonton Oilers have a Game 7 record of 8-4. In best-of-7 NHL playoff series, the Panthers in Florida have a 0-1 Game 7 record, while the Edmonton Oilers on the road have a 4-3 Game 7 record. The Game 7 Florida Panthers loss at home occurred in series 1157, to the visiting New Jersey Devils in the 2012 NHL Preliminary round. In best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series, teams trailing 3-games-nil (such as the Edmonton Oilers in series 1565) have an active 87-series losing streak; Edmonton is poised to end that streak at 87 with the first comeback from a 3-games-nil deficit in the Finals round since series 42, in which the Toronto Maple Leafs rallied for the first-ever MLB/NBA/NHL comeback from such a deficit, against the Detroit Red Wings in the 1942 NHL Finals.
After Game 5: The Edmonton Oilers visited and defeated the Florida Panthers 5-goals-3 to reduce the Florida Panthers best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1565 lead to 3-games-2. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Florida Panthers have a series record of 4-1 and a Game 6 record of 4-1. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-2, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 4-7 and a Game 6 record of 7-4. Series 1565 becomes the first best-of-7 NHL Finals series to open WWWLL since series 1169, in which the Los Angeles Kings opened with a WWWLL win order against the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 NHL Finals; the Kings would win that series in six games.
After Game 4: The Edmonton Oilers hosted and defeated the Florida Panthers 8-goals-1 to reduce the Florida Panthers best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL series 1565 lead to 3-games-1. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Florida Panthers have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 5 record of 3-1. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-1, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 2-6 and a Game 5 record of 4-4. The series 1565 Game 4 victory by the Edmonton Oilers is their first in six tries when trailing a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 3-games-nil. With their series 1565 Game 4 victory, the Edmonton Oilers extend their best-of-7 NHL playoff Game 4 winning streak to six Game 4s (irrespective of Games 1-3 outcomes). The seven-goal victory margin by the Edmonton Oilers in series 1565 Game 4 ties for the largest Game 4 victory margin by a team trailing 3-games-nil in a best-of-7 NHL playoff series (all rounds): In series 1158 Game 4, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Flyers in Philadelphia 10-goals-3 to stave off a sweep in their 2012 NHL Preliminary-round series; Philadelphia would win the series in six games.
After Game 3: The Florida Panthers visited and defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-goals-3 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1565 lead of 3-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Florida Panthers have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 4 record of 1-3. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 3-games-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 0-5 and a Game 4 record of 0-5. With their series 1565 Game 3 victory, the Florida Panthers become the 407th MLB/NBA/NHL team and the 210th NHL team to take a 3-games-nil series lead in a best-of-7 playoff series, and the Edmonton Oilers will attempt to become the fifth NHL team to surmount such a deficit for a 4-games-3 comeback series victory. Both the 2024 best-of-7 NHL and NBA Finals stand at 3-games-nil after three games each; the Spring 2024 best-of-7 playoff season thus becomes the first since the Spring 1996 best-of-7 playoff season (the Colorado Avalanche leading the Florida Panthers [ironically] in series 712, in the 1996 NHL Finals; the Chicago Bulls leading the old Seattle Supersonics in series 719, in the 1996 NBA Finals) to feature 3-games-nil leads in both Finals series.
After Game 2: The Florida Panthers hosted and bested the Edmonton Oilers 4-goals-1 to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1565 lead of 2-games-nil. When leading a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Florida Panthers have a series record of 4-0 and a Game 3 record of 4-0. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 2-games-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 1-9 and a Game 3 record of 5-5. The sole best-of-7 NHL playoff series victory by the Edmonton Oilers in the wake of a 2-games-nil deficit occurred in series 967, over the San Jose Sharks in the 2006 NHL Quarterfinals.
After Game 1: The Florida Panthers hosted and shut out the Edmonton Oilers 3-games-nil to take a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1565 lead of 1-game-nil. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB/NBA/NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Edmonton Oilers have a series record of 13-14 and a Game 2 record of 17-10. Leading a best-of-7 NHL playoff series 1-game-nil, the Florida Panthers suffered their sole series loss in series 726, to the New York Rangers in five games in the 1997 NHL Preliminary round. In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff series, home teams winning Game 1 at home 3-goals-nil have a 9-6 series record (all rounds).
Pre-series assessment: In the 2023-24 NHL regular season, the Florida Panthers finished six points ahead of the Edmonton Oilers. From 1939 through the 2024 NHL Semifinals round, when NHL teams led their best-of-7 playoff series opponents by six regular-season points, they have posted a best-of-7 playoff series record of 23-11 (.676) in those series against those opponents. MLB/NBA/NHL best-of-7 playoff series 1565 is the 19th best-of-7 NHL playoff series for the Florida Panthers, and the 54th for the Edmonton Oilers. The two best-of-7 NHL Finals series losses by the Edmonton Oilers were in series 418 (to the New York Islanders in the 1983 NHL Finals) and in series 971 (to the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2006 NHL Finals).
