In the 411 best-of-7 NHL playoff series through 1999, 102 matched up teams whose regular season point totals differed by 6 or less, 107 featured differences of 7 through 13 points, 101 featured differences of 14 through 24 points, and 101 featured differences of 25 through 59 points. In the 2000 NHL Prelim round, three series fit the lowest quadrant, four fit the second-highest quadrant, and one fits the highest quadrant. From the chart below, note that historical series victory probability does not improve (it actually declines slightly) upon jumping from the lowest to the second-lowest quadrant. Improvement begins upon entry into the second-highest quadrant, and increases markedly upon entry into the highest quadrant. (Of the teams shown on the following, note that Washington was upset by Pittsburgh, and St. Louis by San Jose in the 2000 NHL best-of-7 Prelim round.) 26 April 2000 |
